The Scientific community has solidly established within the last five years that Redox messengers are essential to healing and immune system regulation. We know that production and elimination of redox messengers occur at the same rate within the mitochondria. For optimal health the redox signals must remain in balance, one to the other.

The redox messengers have the ability to REDuce and / or Oxidize molecules in their environment. Remember learning about electrons in school, some electrons gained charges (+) and some lost charges (-)? Reduce represents molecules that are accepting electrons and Oxidize describe molecules that are giving away electrons.

These redox messengers have the ability to repair or destroy cells and tissue. Oxidants can destroy DNA and the cells ability to regenerate. Think of antioxidants as a black box where reactive and potentially dangerous oxidants and reductants go into, and only neutral seawater molecules come out.

As I was reading Dr. Gary L. Samuelson’s book, The Science of Healing Revealed, I kept visualizing a computer network as he described cell function. He refers to cellular function with reference to portals, gateways, signals, and messengers. He informs us that all life processes take place in our cells, and the cell is a container filled with salt water and organic chemicals. All raw materials needed to maintain cellular health pass through a membrane surrounding each cell, and all waste products pass back through for disposal.

Confined inside the cell is another container housing the nucleus and our DNA. Instructions are stored in DNA memory waiting for the proper signal or message to create thousands and thousands of proteins. Protein coding greatly determines cell function and architecture. A small portion of each cell contains its own DNA, the Mitochondria, which the nucleus controls and regulates. The Mitochondria’s main function is to energize the inner workings of cell life and our life energy.                                                                                                                                                         

Dr. Samuelson wrote, “In theory, the DNA sequences of instructions (genes) inside any given cell in your body are entirely identical to the DNA sequences (genes) that are in every other cell (with the exception of the reproductive cells). Lately researchers have cloned whole animals by placing the DNA from a single skin cell inside an empty egg cell. The egg cell starts to divide and form a complete organism. The DNA package inside every cell in the animal has all of the instructions necessary to form a whole new animal. This begs the question: If the DNA in every cell is identical then how does there come to be so many different varieties of cells, etc.? The answer to this question is found in the understanding that the individual cells do not act alone; they are grouped and bound together into tissues.

The genes activated in the individual cells depend largely on messengers sent back and forth from their neighbors and are specific to where the cells are located in the body. After a while, the chemical (protein) messages sent from the surrounding cells activate the genes that determine the behavior of all the cells that collectively form similar tissue. So in a real sense, the cellular function is determined by the environment in which it lives. Cells, in this sense, become what they eat.

The ability of a cell to change its form and function depending on the protein messengers surrounding it is called cellular differentiation. A cell gains its identity (brain, muscle, liver, etc.) from the messengers it finds around it and/or builds inside it.”

How do cells get fuel? Where do cells get energy to process the thousands of protein signals and instructions needed for cellular growth and regeneration? Most cellular processes use only one type of fuel, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP molecules produced in the mitochondria are the body’s powerhouse.

There are molecular codes that control fuel gates and ultimately allow certain processes to engage or not engage. These codes send signals throughout the body, carrying differentiating instructions to every cell. When the signals become disrupted or unbalanced, damage occurs to millions of cells and tissue.

How does the body recognize damage? When cellar chemistry becomes unbalanced oxidative stress results.  Oxidative stress is the natural build-up of damaged cells in the liquid environment inside cells. Oxidative stress is the condition that sends up red flags to neighboring healthy cells that damaged cells are in their neighborhood.

How does the body repair damage? The immune system, activated by oxidative stress, kills harmful invading organisms, and dissolves damaged cells that cause inflammation, redness and swelling.

How does the body regenerate tissues? Restoration to healthy balanced chemistry switches off inflammation.  Neighboring healthy cells receive signals to grow, multiply and replace damaged cells. 

How does the body maintain a healthy chemical balance? Cells produce antioxidants and deploy them in conjunction with reductants to protect their vulnerabilities inside and out. Antioxidants neutralize excessive oxidants, reductants, and free radicals maintaining proper chemical balance. Remember the Black Box mentioned above where the reductants and oxidants go in and only neutralized seawater comes out?

How are reductants and oxidants made? Located inside the cells, the mitochondria produce reactive molecules both oxidants and reductants. Reactive molecules formulate from simple atoms in salt water that fill and surround the cells. The mitochondria also produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a fuel used to energize the cells. ATP is like a rechargeable battery rich in fats, proteins, and enzymes and constantly replenished.

• The reductants pair up with anti-oxidants to protect the cell from excessive damage.
•  The oxidants are the weapon of choice and raise flags that call for help from the immune system to destroy invading organisms.
•  An incorrect balance of reductants and oxidants can cause the immune system to attack healthy cells, inflame tissues, slow down the healing process, and deplete athletic endurance.
